International Monitor Toss Day

The IT department has spent the last few weeks replacing all the old CRT monitors here at work with new flat panel displays. Late on Friday, someone came by to replace the huge, dusty, old but reliable Samsung SyncMaster that had been the centerpiece of my non-work-station for eons. They usually are sent to some reclamation center where they get passed further down the workstation food chain, but the IT specialist noticed the monitor cable had a long gash on the side right down to the copper wire. This monitor was heading to the computer junk yard or recycling center or to be used in International Monitor Toss Day and get thrown out the window of a high rise building somewhere.

I had a few minutes to adjust the new monitor on Friday and I wasn't a happy camper because it's some low-end Dell model. Flat screen monitors don't have the refresh-rate issue that old CRT monitors have when they are set too low and flicker. That can usually be fixed very easily on a CRT with a few settings changes. But if a flat panel looks bad out of the box, I don't know of an easy way to fix the problem.

I've tried changing font smoothing from Standard to ClearType. I've adjusted the monitor up, down and all around. Finally, late on Friday I gave up and chalked it up to tired, weary eyes at the end of the week. I decided that I'll come back on Monday and it'll look great.

Nope. It still looks like crap. It makes me want to toss it right out the window after the big CRT it replaced. Forgive me if I'm in a bad mood this week, but I'll be here bitchin' and moanin' 'bout my monitor.

Oooh, I can imagine how much that sucks. I have a bitchin' BenQ flat panel that rocks my socks! Fortunately, I am the IT department at work and get to be in charge of all research and purchasing of computer equipment. Being the pee-on-do-everything-go-to-gal sometimes has its perks.

sue: yeeess, that is a good perk. i feel like i'm going to need to wear shades to cut down on all the glare off this monitor.

This post is perfect to insert my favorite word.

Defenestrate ~ To toss something, or someone out of a window.

Use it well mi amigo!

P.S. I am still on my old CRT with the Windows 98 logo burned into the middle of it.

Luckily a blog is the perfect "bitching and moaning" forum!

wiscoblonde: tru dat. but i'd rather be bitching and moaning about more earth shaking events than how my monitor is giving me a headache. i'll just have to start bloggin' at home on the laptop more often.

I had a flat screen monitor...quite possibly one just like yours. It went completely bad after I had it for about a year and now I am back to an old skool beige Dell until they find me another "good" monitor. I can wait.

laura b.: old skool has its adavantages sometimes. nice warm color, but the size of the CRT is usually a big downer.

I feel the same way about my new coworker. Yah think we can strap her to the old monitor before they toss it out the window?

Our IT department has decided that they can only replace laptops and blackberrys if there's a "hardware" issue. They're under the illusion that everything else is merely a bug that they can troubleshoot. They are idiots. To remedy this I have learned to create "hardware" issues when something needs replacing.

paige jennifer: we have to wait. International New Coworker Toss Day is next week.

alyndabear: sure, join in the fun. just remember, the monitor goes first, then the tower.

superstar: aHA! it is an Office Space moment, isn't it? i'll have to look up on the calendar and find out when the fax bashing day is...

rachelle: IT people can be the most stubborn folks i've ever run into. i like your solution.

yoga gal: woo hoo! i've only got a 2 story drop from where i sit, but it will still be fun.

I procured about 100 of those samsung syncmasters for my last company about 10 years ago. Most died withing 3 months. Seems like you got the only good one.

hammer: the old Samsung in my nonworkstation caused me no problems, but no product is perfect. i've seen a few of them around here that were in bad shape. and here's what a day will do for you... i'm almost starting to get used to this new LCD monitor. something is still funky with blurry text in a few applications, but maybe it's just my eyes that are at fault.
